iNSPIRE Programme

iNSPIRE is a leadership programme focusing on Grade 9 girl learners from rural and township public schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Free State Provinces.

Today iNSPIRE programme has reached 1002 grade 9 girl learners from 103 public high schools leading their iNSPIRE clubs in their respective school, having a ripple effect on 92 229 boy and girl learners through sustainable projects that iNSPIRE changes in their lives and schools. The programme's primary goal is to address the issue of gender inequalities and poverty in our communities by developing and challenging girl learners' perceptions of self, promote emotional well-being and support them to grow as young leaders in their communities becoming the positive role-models our youth long for.

The programme targets 10 girl learners (5 youth at risk and 5 positive role models) from 10 secondary schools per province - 100 girl learners accompanied of 20 educators. The programme consists of 2 journeys over 4 days.

The first camp themed "Me, Myself and My Journey" focuses on self-discovery and self-reflection about values, understanding who we are and standing up for what we believe in no matter our life experience or background. Through this journey, girl learners heal their emotional wounds. Then, they are asked to reflect on their school environment to identify a challenge and create an iNSPIRE Club to rally other learners and the whole school behind their project and lead their team towards realistic, practical solutions, with the guidance of their educators.

Whilst the second camp themed "My Journey through Leadership" focuses on equipping our learners with leadership and communication skills through games; role-plays; creating leadership art galleries and last but not least, having motivational talks by business leaders from various spheres of society. Our monitoring is driven for four years enabling Valued Citizens Initaitive to track their beneficiaries until matric.

VALUES IN THE LEAD: EDUCATORS ARE THE PILLARS OF OUR SOCIETY, WHEN RECOGNISED THEY DEVELOP THE TENACITY OF OUR LEARNERS TO COMMIT TO THEIR EDUCATION

Over the years there has been a deep-seated sense of loss in the hearts of society and communities regarding how certain professions, previously viewed as vocations, have lost not only their appeal but their dignity and integrity. I dare say ‘ziya jika izinto’ (things are starting to change) and we at Valued Citizens Initiative are enthralled to be at the front line of that change through our Values in the Lead professional development programme.

This month we honoured, celebrated and rewarded 149 educators and School Management Team members from 25 public primary and high schools that have completed successfully this programme. Teachers are the backbone of our society, they not only teach and mould our children but they help groom and raise our leaders. Leadership is transferrable, and through this programme we assist educators to ignite and reignite their own leadership flames in order to awaken learners they encounter.
